What is yoga therapy?
Yoga therapy is the application of specific yoga practices to alleviate physical and mental health conditions with the view of promoting self-care and encouraging overall well-being.
Whilst a general yoga session in general aims to cultivate the body and mind, during yoga therapy specific yoga practices, known and evidenced for their benefits are used to help alleviate or improve mental and physical ailments.

The aim of Yoga Therapy is to promote good health for the person as a whole, the emphasis of this work may be towards the body, the mind, the emotions or a combination of all of these.
"Rather than focusing on yoga methods and practices, yoga therapists fundamentally focus on their clients’ needs.
Their job is to understand why their clients have come to see them and determine what they can do to support them.
To help them in their work, therapists are trained to assess clients through listening, questioning, observing, and occasionally appropriately touching (always with permission).
Therapists look for ways to help their clients reduce or manage their symptoms, improve their function, and help them with their attitude in relation to their health conditions.
After assessing clients, therapists establish appropriate goals, develop a practice intervention, and then teach clients to practice that intervention.
In this sense, therapists choose yoga techniques in relation to how they will specifically benefit individual clients."

Yoga Therapy with Sara-mae

Life throws many obstacles at us all and during my life have experienced a number too. Since Yoga found me, I have found the way to overcome many of those obstacles and I believe that through my own life experiences and journey through yoga, I can help offer this very special understanding and support throughout a yoga therapy session.

My work incorporates basic counselling skills with specialist yoga therapy techniques of movement through asana (postures), focus upon specific pranayama practices (breath work) and so much more. You are sure to acquire effective life skills from each and every session.

My sessions seek to tackle the present moment concern, at the same time as working deeply upon the underlying concern.

YOGA THERAPY AND SOCIAL PRESCRIPTION
At a time when we are faced with unprecedented levels of preventable lifestyle diseases and tragic levels of health inequality, the NHS and healthcare systems around the world are searching for low-cost ways to empower people towards better self care. Increasingly, they are looking towards yoga. In the UK, The NICE guidelines already recommend yoga for lower back pain, the multi-million pound Staff Wellbeing Scheme includes yoga, and yoga is now offered through social prescribing.

Research finds that as comprehensive practice engaging the body, mind, and behaviour; yoga elicits significant health benefits preventing or improving management of lifestyle disease, and the health community is taking notice. Yoga is also adaptable to all health conditions, is cost-effective (economic research suggests savings of billions of pounds through the prescribing of yoga), and provides community in a world where social isolation is itself a health issue.*

As a registered practitioner with the Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council (CNHC), Sara-mae is a recognised practitioner under the Government and Professional Standards Authority.
70% of the NHS budget is currently absorbed by less than 1/3 of the population, for long-term chronic conditions, leading to enormous deficits and unprecedented pressure on staff. Many of these chronic conditions are preventable, or better treated through lifestyle management.
